Sites were visited approximately weekly from early May until early August, and all species in flower were recorded in 25 segments along a 50m transect at each site, and species were recorded if they were within 1m of either side of the transect. Datasets included in this package are 1) cleaned field observations of flowering phenology, 2) taxonomic identity of all recorded species, 3) spatial data representing the location of the center of each transect segment, and 4) spatial data representing the segment polygons. Determination of Phenology and Species: The key dependent variable in this study is the timing of flowering (flowering phenology). To observe this variable, we collected flowering phenology data for all animal-pollinated plants along a transect at each site. The transects were fifty meters long and were sectioned into 25 two-meter segments. From when the transect shows plant emergence in spring, data about the flower phenology was collected within 1m of each transect segment (meaning that an area of 2x2m was monitored in each segment. We visited each site every 5-10 days across the growing season, averaging 12 visits per site per year. At each site visit, we recorded budding, flowering, and fruiting reproductive stages for all animal-pollinated plant species in each transect segment. Reproductive stages that were recorded were bud, open flower, or seed. A species was considered to be flowering if reproductive structures were open and accessible to pollinators. If more than one reproductive phase was present for a given species in a given segment, the flowering stage took precedence, and only flowering was recorded. Data Collection: Field data was collected electronically on a tablet computer using Google Sheets. We used the Sheets API and the “googlesheets4” R package to download and combine all field records. Records were cleaned using a custom R script which corrected common mis-spellings of species codes and eliminated site-species combinations where a species was never recorded in a given year.
